Second Trimester Begins!

I have heard of different ending points for the first trimester, from 12 weeks to 13 weeks, 4 days, to 14 weeks. So to be on the safe side, I just figured I'd wait until I was officially past the 14 week mark to celebrate.

Praise the Lord, we are out of the first trimester and into the second! Wow - it's amazing; there were times I thought I would never be pregnant, let alone get through the first trimester with flying colors. God willing, we will get through both this one and the third, and have our babies in our arms in January.

We had an extra check-up yesterday due to some cramping and pain, but both little ones looked fantastic and the tech didn't see anything to be concerned about. Our babies are so CUTE! They've grown so much; each one measures about 8 centimeters (about 3 1/2 inches) from crown to rump, and they'd probably snuggle nicely into the palms of my hands. Baby A was pretty active this time, waving its hands around and kicking a bit. Baby B was calmer but still spinning around up there - with much more room to stretch out and pose for us than poor Baby A down there on the bottom bunk. I really could just watch the ultrasound for hours - it makes the pregnancy seem so much more real!

I'm so thankful that things are going well; and that I feel great except for being really sore and tired - but that's no big deal. It's just a sign that the babies are growing and it makes the discomfort worth it!

And Surfer and I have been having so much fun trying to find great deals for baby gear on Craigslist. Bargain hunting!!! Love it. All in all, I think the weeks will start to tick by more quickly now that we're not necessarily counting every day but every week, every month. I can't believe we're just a few weeks away from being halfway through with the pregnancy already!

The babies look great - check them out!

Praise the Lord, the babies looked great at the ultrasound! They are beginning to look SO cute, so I thought I'd post some pictures. I think we're definitely seeing their personalities coming out - baby A is on the bottom, and it is so relaxed and calm, a "perfect poser" for the ultrasound camera! Baby B is as bouncy and rambunctious as last time and while the ultrasound tech did finally get a great pic, she had a difficult time doing so!

They are both measuring a few days ahead, with perfect heartbeats. They are each a little over two inches long now. Baby A is 12 weeks, 4 days with a heartrate of 167, baby B is 12 weeks 3 days with a heartrate of 162 (when it was jumping around like crazy - the resting heartrate who knows!).

I'm just amazed at the form, the development, the personality - the miracle - of these two tiny little babies! Wow!

12 Week Ultrasound today!

I haven't posted in awhile because frankly, there's not that much interesting going on! Compared to the frantic pace of IVF, pregnancy has been very relaxing. About a week ago, I stopped taking my progesterone supplements, and since then I have felt great. Still tired, but no more sickness and lots of energy - two things that often go along with heading out of the first trimester and into the second.

I can't believe I'm almost in the second trimester!!! Because I feel so good, I have been a bit worried that everything is still OK with the babies - and we'll have a chance to check that out today. Hopefully we'll finally get some good pics to post - our previous ultrasounds have looked so great on the screen, but the print-outs still look blobby.

I'm really excited that Surfer will be able to come to this ultrasound today. I hope and pray that both babies are doing extremely well, and that they do some jumping jacks to show off for their daddy!

Complaining about a good thing

Most of this blog is happy and up; we've been so blessed with this pregnancy and I don't want to overshadow that with complaints. However, I do want to remember both the challenges and the joys of this pregnancy.

The babies are growing. What a wonderful thing! One of the things you find out shortly after you become pregnant with twins is just how much the growing and stretching of the uterus will hurt. The uterus grows at an amazing rate in a singleton pregnancy, and most women experience the discomfort of this from time to time. But with twins, the joy is DOUBLED! Oy. I literally feel like I have someone pulling my insides apart which makes me want to run away from myself - to get away from the pulling stretching nausea - it's just so weird! And nothing helps; not food, drink, laying down, standing up, walking - when the babies grow, the babies grow!

Thankfully, they've been good to me. They usually give me a day or two of respite between growth spurts, so I feel fantastic every few days, and the other days its really hour by hour. And they warn me, with a bout of nausea the night before the growth spurt. Am I complaining slightly? OK, yes. But overall I'm thankful for this progress - no pain, no gain!

Babies jumping for joy!

Praise the Lord, we are 1/4 of the way through this pregnancy!

Yesterday I had my first appointment with the OB, and while I have mixed reactions to his approach to twin births, I was very glad for two unforgettable things that happened at the appointment.

First, I heard one of the babies' heartbeats! It was amazing - like a tiny little horse galloping inside. It is so surreal, because other than the occasional bout of fatigue or a queasy stomach, I feel very normal. I was thrilled for evidence that the babies are still growing strong in there!

Then, the doctor came in and after we chatted awhile, he decided to do an ultrasound because they could only pick up one heartbeat on the doppler. Yay - another chance to see the babies!

He placed the wand on my stomach, and immediately two perfect little babies flashed on the screen. What an amazing amount of growth since the 8-week ultrasound. And then the CUTEST thing: the top baby started jumping! It would squat down on the bottom of the amniotic sac, and then shoot up, arms and legs flailing and little tiny body flying. Over and over, like it was saying, "watch, Mom, watch - look what I can do!" The bottom baby (which was very cute, too) was a bit more relaxed, waving its arms and legs around but not really needing to show off. Could that be a hint at their personalities?

Surfer was at work and I wish he could have seen his little ones jump around; but I'm so glad that my mom was able to come to the appointment with me... and what a bonus that she got to see the babies, too, with an unexpected peek!
